How to Compare Part D Drug Plans in 10 Minutes
If you take any prescription medications — or even if you don't yet — choosing the right Part D drug plan matters more than most people realize. Here's a quick, practical way to compare plans.
Step 1: List your current medications. Include dosages and how often you take them. This is the single most important piece of information for comparing plans accurately.
Step 2: Check the plan's formulary. Every Part D plan has a list of covered drugs (the "formulary"), and not all plans cover the same medications. Make sure your prescriptions are on the plan's list — and check which "tier" they fall into, since that affects your cost.
Step 3: Compare the total cost, not just the premium. A plan with a low monthly premium isn't always the cheapest option overall. Factor in deductibles, copays, and coinsurance for your specific medications.
Step 4: Check the pharmacy network. Some plans offer lower costs at preferred pharmacies. If you have a pharmacy you love, confirm it's in-network — or in the "preferred" tier for the best pricing.
Step 5: Review annually, even if you're happy. Part D plans change their formularies and costs every year. A plan that was great for you last year might raise your specific drug's cost significantly this year. The Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7) is your window to switch.
Step 6: Get a second set of eyes. Comparing plans can be genuinely confusing — and I do this every day. I'm happy to run the numbers with you for free.
